Commentary
Called variously "fondo della contessa Giulini" or simply "fondo Giulini" in the literature, the small excavated site (ca. 25 x 35 m) situated on the south-western foot of the hill on which Prestino lies, today beside the motorway, is the find site of the Prestino inscription and the architectonic complex which was unearthed in the subsequent salvage excavation (see CO·48 Prestino for details). The latter, conducted by the surveyor Angelo Cirillo of the Sopraintendenza Lombardia, brought to light two drystone walls and an enclosure built of slabs (9.5 x 4.8 m), and inside the latter ceramic finds datable to Golacessa III A. See Mirabella Roberti & Rittatore Vonwiller 1966, Mirabella Roberti 1966, Tibiletti Bruno 1966b: 279–282, Luraschi et al. 1969: 221–223, no. 28 (with site map), and De Marinis & Motta 1991: 211 f., n. 16, and site map on p. 210, fig. 6. The function of the space remains unclear, but is usually assumed to be related to public/official or sacral activities (e.g. Mirabella Roberti & Rittatore Vonwiller 1966: 407 "complesso con destinazione probabilmente pubblica, religiosa o profana", Mirabella Roberti 1966: 115 "impianto sacrale", Tibiletti Bruno 1966b: 284 "zona cultuale o funeraria"), the latter interpretation being probably mainly due to the putative dedicatory inscription (cf. Casini et al. 2001: 108 f.) – note, however, the closeness of the spot (ca. 160 m) to the Via Mantegna site (cf. De Marinis 2001: 63, Casini et al. 2001: 108 f.).
