Commentary

See a short description on the Museum's internet pages.

The monuments from the Lunigiana are dated by typological analogy, since no archaeological context is known (apart from the Stela di Minucciano, see therefore Ambrosi & Mannoni 1972: 244). The weapons depicted on the stelae can be compared with known archaeological types from the Hallstatt culture and etruscan (Este?) culture: "Antenna dagger" ("Antennendolch") from Ha C2, Ha D2 (dated in Golasecca area between 2nd half of the 7th and 1st half of the 6t century BC) and socketed axe with rectangular blade from the Etruscan context (2nd quarter of the 6t century BC. Maggiani 1987: 438, fn. 6; there cited literature for Hallstatt parallels: De Marinis 1975: 262-265, Stary 1981: 300-301, Etruscan parallels: Stary 1981: I 86-87, II 457 (Map E1, Type W 46)). Cf. De Marinis 1988: 254 ("alfabeto etrusco, secondo Maggiani di derivazione Chiusina")
