Commentary

Images in Bermond Montanari 1988: 241, fig. 2 (drawings = Malnati & Bermond Montanari 1989: 1574, fig. 4) and tav. LXIII.35 (photos), Malnati & Bermond Montanari 1989: tav. I b, II b and c, III b and c (photos).

One of two cylindrical sandstone cippi found in 1984/1985 on the right bank of the river Secchia during work in a gravel pit, thought to belong to a nearby (as yet unidentified) necropolis (Bermond Montanari 1988: 239; for archaeological finds in the area see Malnati & Bermond Montanari 1989: 1567–1570). The second cippus (Bermond Montanari 1988: 240–242, no. 35) is broken into two parts, but was repaired; about a third of the engraved surface was damaged during the excavation. The buried lower section (72 cm) is only roughly shaped. The round top section is decorated with two rows of engraved images (winged lions and a sphinx) which are bordered by decorative bands and separated by an inscription. Above these, painted decorations of geometric motifs are executed with paint. Dating from ibid.
