Commentary
Lexically in OIr. dún, MW din 'city, fort', OBret. din gl. arx, Gaul. dūnum (e.g. Enderlicher's glossary dunum enim montem, Lambert 1994: 203) < PIE *dʰuh₂-no- 'enclosure' (Matasović 2009: 108, LEIA: D-222 f., Watkins 1991, Zair 2012: 116, IEW: 260). Attested very frequently as second element of Gaulish toponyms, and likely in any number of personal names containing an element dun- (AcS I: 1372–1377, DLG: 154–156, Delamarre 2007: 220 et passim, KGP: 200 f., Meid 2005: 107 f.).
