Commentary
Latinised Celtic personal name, either an on-stem maelo in the dative, or an o-stem maelon(ii̯)os, derived from the latter, in the genitive; the former may be more likely considering the comparanda: a name (Latinised) maelo, also mailo, is particularly common in Lusitania, but the also appears on the continent, e.g. CIL XII p. 839 ad. 3721 maelonis (gen.) at Nîmes, and esp. V 7356 maelonis (gen.) at Casteggio (PV) (see AcS II: 370–372, Delamarre 2007: 122, 124, also for other formations). Holder ibid. (also Tibiletti Bruno 1981: 188) connects the names with OIr. máel 'bald, bare' < *mai̯lo- (Matasović 2009: 260, etymology unclear).
