Commentary

In Gaulish onomastics as second element of compound personal names (e.g. adretios, ueretus, uoretovirius), uncertain in simplex names (retecius?), see KGP: 258, GPN: 249–251, DLG: 33 s.v. adret-, Meid 2005: 115 f., Delamarre 2007: 230 et passim. Lexically in OIr. -red, MW rhed 'run', OBret. red 'run, race', etc. Thematic formation from the PIE root *ret- 'run' which is particular to Celtic (see NIL: 575). Cf. rit- with zero-grade from the same root. Variants with tau gallicum in the root auslaut (reds-, rett-, ress-, rest- etc.) are also from the same root, but with dental suffix (see NIL: 576).
