The little pot is a museum find made by Istenič between 1986 and 1989, but the documentation in the museum's inventory lists provides ample context. The pot is part of a number of archaeological finds from the western cemeteries of Roman Poetovio, which were excavated in 1883 and/or 1884 under the supervision of the Museum Joanneum by Martin Vnuk, a local of Hajdina west of Ptuj. It was found on a field belonging to Miha Štolc in Spodnja Hajdina (lot 535) and came into the museum in 1894. The find spot is situated near a secondary road which branched off from the old road to Celeia (modern Celje), along which the largest grave complex lies (Istenič 1999: 46 f.; map in fig. 3 on p. 15). Though Vnuk appears to have sometimes disarranged find contexts, the pot can be ascribed to grave 555 (= grave 8 in the original inventories; Istenič 2000: 179).

The vessel is a thrown pot with coarse, porose surface with remains of dull reddish brown glaze around the shoulder and neck; no scorch marks (details in Eichner et al. 1994: 132). It fits in with the provincial Roman pottery of Poetovio (Istenič 1999: 143), but is too general in shape to be dated typologically. (Similar pieces from the western necropolis are inv. no.s 5946 and 8199 in the Joanneum.) The dating to the 2nd–3rd century AD is based on that of a ceramic Roman oil lamp (Firmalampe, inv. no. 8203) which was (very probably) also found in grave 555 (Eichner et al. 1994: 132; Istenič 2000: 179).

On 18th September 2020, a material sample for thermoluminescence dating was taken from the bottom of the pot along the outer rim.
