Commentary

Small ceramic vessel found in the vicinity of Milano ("in der Gegend von Mailand") before 1853, when its existence was noted by Mommsen 1853: 217. The vessel was at the time in the possession of the collector Bernardino Biondelli, who was in correspondence with Mommsen and considered the object authentic. Nobody else appears to have ever seen it; the object's whereabouts are unknown – Rhŷs inquired after it twice in vain at the Castello Sforzesco in Milano (Rhŷs 1913: 45, 1914: 24), and it is not part of the collections of the Civico Museo Archeologico (Milano) as of early 2022. The placement of the document under the header "Cernusco sul Naviglio" in Morandi 2004: 612 (no. 135) is an error.
