Meaning: 'vinegar bowls'

Commentary

Latin term for small cups or bowls (~ 0.068 l) which held (typically) vinegar or honey, besides several other functions, usually made of ceramics or glass (DNP s.v. Acetabulum). Syncope in the fourth syllable, as also attested in the Transalpine Gaulish loan acitabli (inflected as a masculine, see Adams 2003: 700 f.).
