Commentary
Identified as the reflex of the demonstrative pronoun *istos, cognate with Lat. iste, by Lejeune 1971: 89 with n. 314. Etymological *[st] is denoted with the letter san. See also Eska 1991, Schrijver 1995: 403, Motta 2000: 197, Eska & Mercado 2005: 166, Stifter 2010: 370.
Originally interpreted as a personal name by Tibiletti Bruno 1969c: 186 (cf. also Morandi 2004: ? and 2017: 366 f.), who then switched to pronominal ipsos (Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 140); cf. Prósper 2002: 85, n. 18, Prósper 2007: 39.
