Commentary
The element uid- in Continental Celtic personal names (s. Delamarre 2007: 236 et passim, DLG: 318, especially CIL XIII 1036 epotsorouidi [gen., Aquitania], s. KGP: 210) may be a continuation of the PIE root *u̯ei̯d- 'see' (see also u̯iđ- with t-suffix and u̯ind- with n-infix), either of a zero-grade derivation (root noun *u̯id- in Ved. víd- 'knowledge', Gaul. dru-u̯id-s 'tree-knowing' [?], OIr. ainb i 'unknowing'), u-stem *u̯id-u- in Ved. vidú- 'knowing') or as a variant of a full-grade form (*u̯ei̯d-o- in OIr. fíad 'regard' etc. [?]), s. NIL: 717–722. In the first case, /i/ is short; in the second case, u̯īd- with long /ī/ represents a phonetic variant of u̯ēd- (s. Matasović 2009: 407 f. s.v. *wēdo- 'sight, presence') with raised vowel (cf. dēu̯-), which may be attested in a subset of names in ued- (s. Delamarre 2007: 235 f. et passim). In personal names, u̯id- with 'know, see'-semantics is difficult to keep apart from u̯idu- 'wood'.
