Commentary

Two t-abstracts from the PIE root *u̯ei̯d- 'see' (cf. u̯id-, u̯ind-) are continued in Celtic: *u̯id-to- 'known' (OIr. fess, MW gwys, MBret. gous) and *u̯id-tu- 'knowledge' (OIr. fiuss, W gwys), see NIL: 717–722, Irslinger 2002: 100 f., 266 f. The u-stem may appear as first element in Gaulish personal names in uisu- (DLG: 318 f., Delamarre 2007: 236 et passim). In the Cisalpine Celtic attestations, the decision between the two stems must depend on semantic considerations.
