Inscribed in two lines, usually read upside-down with first line ''atekua'' which is, as the stela stands, below ''aśouni'', probably because alpha and epsilon, which are letters not commonly inverted, are upside-down in both lines. Of the other potentially indicative letters, upsilon is not inverted ({{c||U}}), but inverted upsilon {{c||U3}} appears in two other inscriptions at [[Stresa]] ([[VB·23]], [[VB·26]]), so it is difficult to judge which variant should be considered more "regular" here. Nu in the upper line strongly resembles the inverted or retrograde nu in [[VB·26]] and [[VB·22]]. Overall, considering the tendency toward inverted letters at Stresa and the fact that the orientation of the present inscription on the stela is beyond doubt, it may be more accurate to read it sinistroverse, with ''aśouni'' as line 1 and ''atekua'' as line 2, and inverted alpha, epsilon and nu.
Inscribed in two lines in the upper area of the stela (length line 1 48 cm, line 2 27 cm). Despite surface damage, the letters can be cleary identified under raking light, but a number of open questions remain. The reading {{w||atekua}} {{w||aśouni}} 'Atekua (daughter) of Aśounos' goes back to {{bib|Ferrero 1897}}: 59, no. 3, who points out that the last group of strokes in the upper line appear to form mu {{c||M7}}, but prefers ''ni'' to get a genitival patronym. Apart from {{bib|Pauli 1891}}: 158, who reads ''aśoum'', scholars have stuck with Ferrero's linguistically more plausible reading, but the left-most stroke is very clearly oblique and attached to the previous one; inverted Latin mu of a similar shape also appears in [[VB·26]]. Putative nu would have the same shape as in [[VB·22]], viz. Lepontic nu but with hasta and angle of the same height, arguably a compromise between Lepontic and Latin nu.


De-Vit in the original publication inexplicably claims that the inscription is applied vertically. Drawing with inverted inscription already in {{bib|Ponti 1896}} (see above) without comment; also in {{bib|Ferrero 1897}}: 59, no. 3 ("L'iscrizione è incisa capovolta sulla pietra.") ''atekua aśouni'', preferring the reading ''ni'' over mu (as in [[VB·26]]) to get a genitival patronym. Accurately reflecting the orientation only {{bib|Pauli 1891}}: 158 (though with incorrect orientation of alpha in the upper line), reading mu rather than ''ni'': ''aśoum atekua''). Otherwise general following of Ferrero: {{bib|Danielsson 1909}}: 26–28, {{bib|Rhŷs 1913}}: 51 f., no. 2 (suggesting that the text was inscribed upside down because it was more convenient for the stone cutter), {{bib|Jacobsohn 1927}}: 30, no. 190, Whatmough {{bib|PID}} 107 f., no. 302 (believes that the inscription is upright and applied on the lower end of the stela, which makes no sense whatsoever as it would not have been visible and the stela's upper end can be clearly identified by the rounded top; argues against the other orientation in n. 1 because of the order of the name formula), {{bib|Pisani 1964}}: 282 f., no. 119 F, {{bib|Tibiletti Bruno 1975}}: 53, {{bib|Tibiletti Bruno 1978}}: 153, {{bib|Tibiletti Bruno 1981}}: 170 f., no. 17 (thinks that the inscription is applied as drawn by De-Vit), {{bib|Solinas 1995}}: 374, no. 126, {{bib|Morandi 2004}}: 567, no. 70 (says like Whatmough that the inscription is on the wrong end of the stela "forse per errore").
Equally problematic is the inscription's orientation – an issue which this document shares with two inscriptions of slabs from nearby [[Brisino]] ([[VB·22]], [[VB·23]]). De-Vit in the original publication inexplicably claims that it is applied vertically, but usually it is read upside-down, with {{w||atekua}} as the first line. The rendering above shows the inscription as seen on the upright stela. An inverted drawing of the inscription is already shown in {{bib|Ponti 1896}} without comment; {{bib|Ferrero 1897}}: 59, no. 3 notes that "[l]'iscrizione è incisa capovolta sulla pietra". Again it is {{bib|Pauli 1891}}: 158 who accurately reflects the orientation (though with incorrect orientation of alpha in the upper line), but most scholars follow Ferrero. {{bib|Rhŷs 1913}}: 51 f., no. 2 suggests that the text was inscribed upside-down because it was more convenient for the stone cutter when the stela lay flat. Whatmough {{bib|PID}} 107 f., no. 302 argues that the expected genitival name formula in the right order supports this orientation; he also states that the inscription is in fact upright and applied on the lower end of the stela (cf. {{bib|Morandi 2004}}: 567, no. 70 "forse per errore"). Interestingly, this is also the case for the present stela, whose lower part is not, as usual, unfinished, but worked into a rounded shape. {{bib|Piana Agostinetti 2004}}: 195 suggests that the stela was not interred, but put up in some kind of support. Alternatively, it may be considered whether the stone, despite its shape, was laid down horizontally to cover the grave. In that case, the inscription would, like, arguably, [[VB·22]] and [[VB·23]], be applied to be legible when standing above it. The argument regarding the order of the names is weak not only because of the uncertain reading of the putative genitival patronym {{w||aśouni}}, but also because the epichoric inscriptions on the [[Stresa]] stelae do not exactly distinguish themselves through the regularity of their name formulae (see [[VB·22]], [[VB·23]], [[VB·26]]).

The second letter san in the upper line features a vertical stroke through the centre {{c||Ś5}} in Morandi's drawing. This letter variant is attested in two other inscriptions ([[NO·21.1]], [[BG·41.16]]), but its identification in the present one is uncertain – a corresponding trace can be made out, but may be an irregularity in the surface. As also noted by Morandi, omicron has a somewhat irregular triangular shape.
