Commentary

Masculine o-stem personal name in the dative. The base was compared with CIL II 5076 pelgus (twice) (Astorga, Spain) by Lattes in Lattes & Nicodemi 1913: 417 (cf. PID: 554); Rhŷs 1913: 84 prefers a comparison with belgius transmitted as the name of a Gaulish leader by Pompeius Trogus Prol. 24,7 etc. (see AcS I: 384). A base belg- is also favoured by Lejeune 1971: 64, n. 214 with reference to the cognomen belgina in CIL V 2004 from Milano, and Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 140 (t. belgis[ CIL XIII 1687 from Lyon) (also Eska & Mercado 2005: 163). (No comparanda with /k/ are available.) Cf. also Delamarre 2007: 148, and p. 39 belgo (theonym?) in Aquitania.

belg- is also preferable in terms of etymology (see the morpheme page), as none can be found for pelg-. Prosdocimi & Solinas 2017: 355–357 discuss the possibility that belgos is an ethnonym 'the Belgian' (cf. eluveitie, kalatiknos and onesi), but even if the base belg- is indeed the same etymologically, the o-stem belgos must be a derived personal name, as the ethnonym belgās is an ā-stem (sg. belgā, cf. De Bernardo Stempel 1999: 52, n. 33).
