Commentary

Attested in Latin script, the form is best classified as a Latin genitive (cf. sabi, cesii, pusionis, )antionis). The base is opaque and may not be Celtic, though a connection with the Aquitanian ethnonym onēsiī (AcS II: 855, mentioned by Strabon IV 2.1 and possibly Pliny Nat. Hist. IV.108, and in the toponym aquae onesiorum, cf. Duval 1989b: 726) seems possible (cf. Morandi 2004: 560). Cf. eluveitie, kalatiknos and pelkui for names which may be derived from ethnonyms.
