Commentary
Compound personal name in the nominative, also attested in Gaulish CIL XIII 1551 alcovindo (Rodez). The second element is u̯ind- 'bright, white, fair' with */nd/ spelled with nu as usual in Cisalpine Celtic (see The Cisalpine Celtic Languages). The first element alko- is opaque; the oft-cited connection with the elk-word goes back to KGP: 121. Cf. alkouesi and see the morpheme page for details. See also Pauli 1885: 92, Kretschmer 1905: 103, Danielsson 1909: 25, Rhŷs 1913: 20 ('who carries a white shield'), Lejeune 1971: 55 f., Tibiletti Bruno 1981: 151 ('dalle bianche corna'), Tibiletti Bruno 1981: 162, no. 9, Prósper 1998: 147 f., Motta 2000: 204, no. 10, Villar & Prósper 2005: 225 ('blanco como un ciervo'), Uhlich 2007: 384, Delamarre 2007: 17, Salomon 2024: 1153 f.
