Commentary

First published in Herbig 1906: 190, no. 7. Examined for LexLep on 18th August 2021.

Images in Herbig 1906: 190, no. 7 (drawing), Rhŷs 1913: tav. IV (photo), Crivelli 1973b: tav. 8.10 (drawing), Crivelli 1977: tav. 1 (drawing), Morandi 1999: 162, no. 5 (drawing) and pl. III.2 (photo = Morandi 2004: tav. V.8), Morandi 2004: 525, fig. 8.8 (drawing).

Inscribed on the bottom of the vessel (length 3.1 cm). The only clear letter is large M5 s in the middle, which determines the orientation. The rightmost letter A6 s is usually read as alpha without a bar, as attested in Latin cursive. Herbig reads sinistroverse amui, judging the scratch on the very left to be non-intentional, while Rhŷs 1913: 51, n. 8 includes it and reads auma or amua (cf. Crivelli 1943: 53). Whatmough 1933: 75 f., no. 256 and Lejeune 1971: 49, 63 follow Herbig, though the former interprets the scratch on the left as a punct amui·. aśui is suggested by Tibiletti Bruno 1975b: 54 and 1978: 143, followed by Solinas 1995: 322, no. 4 and Morandi 1999: 162, no. 5 (also 2004, where he suggests alternative addL1 sU sŚ2 sA6 s aśul with Greek lambda, cf. TI·4).

The scratch on the left is certainly intentional, which excludes a dative ending -ūi̯. Rhŷs' readings could be interpreted as ā-stem personal names, but the reading of the leftmost, somewhat squeezed-in letter is uncertain. M5 s, which occurs three times in inscriptions (potentially) from Giubiasco (TI·5 arimai, TI·9 remu), is more likely to be Latin mu than a form of san which is otherwise unattested in the Lepontic alphabet (see Ś for a detailed discussion). There are no clear Lepontic features in the inscription.
