Commentary
Personal name in the genitive with the archaic (or Lepontic) allomorph -oi̯so (Gambari & Colonna 1988: 135–139, Lejeune 1990: 69 f., Prosdocimi 1991: 149 f., Motta 1992: 313, Solinas 1995: 369, no. 113bis, Schrijver 1997: 16, Uhlich 1999: 293, Stifter 2020: 31).
The interpretation of the base depends on the reading of chi, on which see the inscription page and Ψ. Gambari & Colonna 1988: 134 f. read kosi̯o- and compare "rari gentilizi locali del tipo Cos(s)ius/Cus(s)ius". The latter, however, manifest primarily in forms with /u/ in the base, which is sometimes arguable (Raetic kusenkus (CE-1.4 – possibly a theonym), allegedly Raetic χusus in GR·3, and assorted Etruscan names, with sound substitution of /u/ for IE /o/), sometimes not (CIL V 8896 cussae [dat.] in the Valtellina, T. and C. Cusius of Torino [CIL V 7027, 7028]). Rare Latin cognomina in coss- (cossus and suffixed variants) are listed in Kajanto 1982: 178. See kos(s)- on the attestation of the base in potentially Celtic context, and its doubtful Celticity; the nearest comparanda are CIL V 2937 cosius, cosiae (dat.) at Padova. Delamarre's (2007: 218) kosti/u- can arguably be discounted for χosioiso, as we would maybe not expect a tau gallicum cluster to be spelled with sigma at this early date.
Alternatively, it has been suggested that the base is gođ- 'guest' as attested on the Prestino stela (Prosdocimi 1991: 150 f., Stifter 2020: 31), but this reading is less likely with regard to the sound value of chi in archaic inscriptions (see Ψ) and to the spelling of the tau gallicum cluster as noted above. See also Markey & Mees 2003: 119.
