Commentary

o-stem personal name metelos in the dative, cf. meteli (gen.) in a Latin gravestone (late 1st c. BC) from the Cerrione necropolis (Cresci Marrone & Solinas 2013: 67–69), CIL V 7850 metela (Borgo San Dalmazzo; the inscription also contains Ligurian onomastic material), AE 1965, 196 metelicci (gen., St.-Jean-de-Garguier), a derived form μετελα̣ιος in RIIG VAU-03-01 (RIG G-112, cf. GPN: 459), CIL XIII 6855 metelus (cogn., Mainz), and maybe CIL XIII 800 metellus (Bordeaux) (see Lejeune 1971: 64, n. 211, Delamarre 2007: 133, Gambari 2019b: 98). Tibiletti Bruno 1978: 149 (also 1981: 175) assumes that the name is the Latin cognomen metellus (see also Gambari 2019b: 96–98, who suggests a loan from Etruscan), but, though some of the attestations mentioned above may be loans, the similarity may be chance. Rhŷs 1913: 57 connects the name with the formally corresponding OCorn. midil 'reaper' < PC *metelo- (also OIr. meithel (ā, f), W medel (m) 'reaping party' < *metelā), from the PIE root *h₂met- 'mow, cut' (see met-; cf. also DLG: 226). Cf. the patronym metelikna; the root *h₂met- may also be attested in metalui.
